Banking industry has witnessed a tremendous revolution due to fast growth of Digital technologies. Government and regulators are also facilitating the digital transformation with their Digital India initiatives.

One such initiative is UIDAI offering Aadhaar based eKYC (Know Your Customer) and RBI mandating acceptance of such eKYC for bank account opening. RBI has relaxed the KYC/AML norms, to permit resident individuals, to open and operate savings bank accounts online, without him/her having to visit the bank branch; subject to certain operational restrictions.

Recently, in response to concerns related to privacy and allocation of services, the Hon’ble Supreme Court has upheld the constitutional validity of Aadhaar, while allowing users more freedom about the kinds of services that one chooses to associate with it. This allows us to innovate and develop solutions to provide users more flexibility and enhance the user experience.

Digital Account Opening – The way forward

In the current scenario, a customer can request a new account by downloading the banking app and provide the bank with Aadhaar number and authorization (and his/her biometrics or OTP key) to perform eKYC. The bank checks against the UIDAI database that contains all the KYC information for the customer and opens a limited bank account for customer in line with regulator-mandated norms. The entire process happens online and in real-time.

With the recent Supreme Court ruling where it upheld the validity of the Aadhaar act and subsequent RBL guidelines discontinuing Aadhaar based authentication, Decimal Technologies have developed a digital solution keeping the journey fully paperless ensuring all relevant data capture as well as keeping customer acquisition costs low.

We propose an assisted model wherein bank agent visits the customer for on-boarding and captures all relevant details in-app. In such a scenario, in lieu of Aadhaar details, we capture three sets of customer ID details:-

  1. Customer Image
  2. Customer profile data such as customer name, address, DoB etc.
  3. Capture OVD (Officially Valid Documents) to establish PoI (Proof of Identity) and PoA (Proof of Address)
    1. Passport
    2. Driving License
    3. Voter ID card
    4. MNREGA Job card
    5. Aadhaar letter (if available)

All the captured data is securely stored and sent to DVU (Data Verification Unit) for further verification and validation.

Advantages

This entire solution is developed on our integrated technology platform Vahana. This solution has been built on a no-code to low-code development application platform called DataOn which is a fully configurable platform that helps churn out changes rapidly with no code changes required to be performed at application level. How does it Work?

The above sample representative screen shows the current flow wherein customers mobile, PAN and Aadhar details are verified/validated real-time.

If Aadhaar is not available, then the below screen is shown to customer where customer details are captured as per Bank KYC form along with customer photo.

After the above details are captured, OVD documents are captured and stored securely for verification by DVU.

Future Roadmap

As we move towards an exciting future fuelled by more freedom and choice for the customer, our on-boarding solution will in fact become an even more comprehensive and powerful customer profiling tool by incorporating the latest AI-ML tools to gain insights from the documents captured above via OCR scanning and FRS (Facial Recognition System) to digitally verify the identity of the applicant. All datasets will be saved and verified digitally keeping the journey completely paperless and in turn, keeping the customer acquisition cost as low as possible and help organizations achieve operational efficiency.
